Shellsburg Summary

History

Shellsburg is a small city located in Benton County, Iowa. It is situated on the banks of the Cedar River, about 20 miles north of Cedar Rapids. The city was founded in 1854 by a group of settlers from Shellsburg, Pennsylvania. The settlers named the town after their hometown in Pennsylvania.
The first settlers in Shellsburg were mostly farmers, and the town quickly grew to become a thriving agricultural community. The town was incorporated in 1872, and the first mayor was elected in 1873.
In the late 19th century, Shellsburg was a major center for the production of brick and tile. The town was also home to several sawmills, a flour mill, and a woolen mill.
