History

The area that is now Sheffield was first settled in 1854 by a group of settlers from New York. The town was originally known as Shell Rock Falls, named after the Shell Rock River that runs through the area. In 1856, the town was renamed Sheffield after the English city of Sheffield.
The city was incorporated in 1876 and was home to a variety of industries, including a flour mill, a sawmill, a brickyard, and a creamery. The city also had a railroad station, which was used to transport goods and passengers.
