Readlyn was founded in 1856 by German immigrants who had come to the area from Pennsylvania. The town was named after the German city of Reutlingen. The first settlers built a log cabin and a sawmill, and the town quickly grew. By 1858, the town had a post office, a blacksmith shop, a general store, and a school.
In 1867, the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Railroad built a line through Readlyn, connecting it to the larger cities of Waterloo and Cedar Falls. This allowed the town to become a major shipping center for the surrounding area.
In 1871, the town was incorporated and the first mayor was elected. The town continued to grow and by the early 1900s, it had a population of over 500.

Economy

Readlyn’s economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several farms, as well as a few small businesses. The town also has a grain elevator, a feed mill, and a lumber yard.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 545 people, 213 households, and 149 families residing in the city. The population density was 877.4 inhabitants per square mile (339.3/km2). There were 229 housing units at an average density of 369.7 per square mile (142.9/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 98.2% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 0.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.7% of the population.
There were 213 households, of which 33.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.5% were married couples living together, 9.4% had a female householder with no husband present, 4.7% had a male householder with no wife present, and 31.4% were non-families. 27.5% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 3.09.
The median age in the city was 38.3 years. 27.2% of residents were under the age of 18; 6.2% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 24.2% were from 25 to 44; 25.2% were from 45 to 64; and 17.2% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 48.7% male and 51.3% female.
In 2000, the median income for a household in the city was $41,250, and the median income for a family was $48,750. Males had a median income of $31,250 versus $22,500 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,945. About 4.2% of families and 5.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.3% of those under age 18 and 5.3% of those age 65 or over.
