Quasqueton is a small city located in Buchanan County, Iowa, United States. It is situated on the banks of the Wapsipinicon River, approximately 10 miles east of Independence. The population was 845 at the 2010 census.

History

The area that is now Quasqueton was first settled in 1845 by a group of German immigrants led by John Quasqueton. The town was originally known as Quasqueton Station, and was a stop on the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad. The town was officially incorporated in 1876.
In the late 19th century, Quasqueton was a thriving agricultural community, with a variety of businesses and industries. The town was home to a flour mill, a creamery, a brickyard, a sawmill, a blacksmith shop, and a variety of other businesses.

Geography

Quasqueton is located at 42°25'25" North, 91°59'45" West (42.423, -91.996). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.9 square miles, all of it land.

Economy

The economy of Quasqueton is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several farms, as well as a variety of small businesses. The town is also home to a number of manufacturing companies, including a furniture factory and a plastics factory.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 845 people, 339 households, and 233 families residing in the city. The population density was 933.3 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the city was 97.3% White, 0.6% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 339 households, out of which 33.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.3% were married couples living together, 9.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.3% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
