Preston Summary

Preston, Iowa is a small town located in Jackson County, Iowa. It is situated in the rolling hills of the Upper Iowa River Valley, and is surrounded by the towns of Maquoketa, Bellevue, and Andrew. The population of Preston was estimated to be 545 in the year 2000.

History

Preston was founded in 1854 by a group of settlers from Pennsylvania. The town was named after Preston, Pennsylvania, the hometown of the settlers. The first settlers built a log cabin and a sawmill, and the town quickly grew. By 1856, the town had a post office, a school, and a church.
In the late 1800s, Preston was a thriving agricultural community. The town was home to several grain elevators, a creamery, and a cheese factory. The town also had a blacksmith, a livery stable, and a general store.
