Peosta Summary
Peosta is a city located in Dubuque County, Iowa, United States. It is part of the Dubuque, Iowa Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 1,945 at the 2010 census.
History
Peosta was founded in 1855 by German immigrants who had come to the area from Pennsylvania. The town was named after the Peosta Creek, which runs through the area. The creek was named after Chief Peosta, a leader of the Meskwaki tribe.
The first settlers in the area were mostly farmers, and the town grew slowly. In 1872, the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Railroad built a line through the town, which helped to spur growth. The town was incorporated in 1876.
In the early 1900s, the town began to grow rapidly. The population increased from just over 500 in 1900 to over 1,000 by 1910. The town was home to several businesses, including a flour mill, a creamery, a brickyard, and a furniture factory.

Peosta is located at 42°27′17″N 90°45′45″W (42.454722, -90.762500). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,945 people, 745 households, and 517 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,621.7 people per square mile (625.3/km2). There were 790 housing units at an average density of 658.3 per square mile (254.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.17.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $45,000, and the median income for a family was $51,250. Males had a median income of $36,250 versus $25,000 for females. The per capita income for the city was $20,845. About 4.2% of families and 5.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
