Parkersburg is a city located in Butler County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Butler County. Parkersburg is part of the Waterloo–Cedar Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Parkersburg was founded in 1855 by William Parker, a settler from Ohio. The city was named after him. The first post office in Parkersburg was established in 1856. The city was incorporated in 1876.

Geography

Parkersburg is located at 42°17′N 92°45′W (42.28, -92.75). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.7 square miles (4.4 km2), all of it land.

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,077.1 people per square mile (415.9/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.3% were married couples living together, 10.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.7% were non-families. 30.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 3.00.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 19.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
