Oxford Junction Summary

Oxford Junction is a small city located in Jones County, Iowa, United States. The population was 545 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cedar Rapids Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Oxford Junction was founded in 1854 by a group of settlers from Oxford, England. The town was originally named Oxford, but the name was changed to Oxford Junction in 1856 when the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad built a line through the town. The railroad was a major factor in the growth of the town, as it provided a means of transportation for goods and people.
The town was incorporated in 1872 and the first mayor was elected in 1873. The town grew steadily throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and by the 1950s it had a population of over 1,000.
