Oskaloosa Summary

Oskaloosa is a city located in Mahaska County, Iowa, United States. It is the county seat of Mahaska County and is located along the Des Moines River. The population was 11,463 at the 2010 census. Oskaloosa is the home of William Penn University and the Iowa Masonic Library and Museum.

History

Oskaloosa was founded in 1844 by Amos and William Cutler. The city was named after Chief Oskaloosa, a leader of the Ioway tribe. The city was incorporated in 1853.
In the late 19th century, Oskaloosa was a major center of the temperance movement. The city was home to the Iowa Prohibition Party and the Iowa State Temperance Union.

Geography

Oskaloosa is located at 41°14'25" North, 92°35'17" West (41.240278, -92.588333). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.2 square miles (21.2 km2), of which 8.1 square miles (21.0 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) is water.

Economy

Oskaloosa's economy is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to several large employers, including John Deere, Oskaloosa Foods, and Oskaloosa Foundry. The city also has a thriving retail sector, with several large shopping centers and a variety of restaurants and other businesses.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 11,463 people, 4,717 households, and 2,945 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,420.3 people per square mile (548.7/km2). There were 4,945 housing units at an average density of 609.2 per square mile (235.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.5% Asian, 0.2% Pacific Islander, 0.5% from other races, and 0.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 4,717 households, out of which 28.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.7% were non-families. 32.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 2.90.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 23.7% under the age of 18, 11.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 20.3% from 45 to 64, and 19.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $33,917, and the median income for a family was $43,917. Males had a median income of $31,917 versus $22,917 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,917. About 6.7% of families and 9.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 11.7% of those under age 18 and 8.7% of those age 65 or over.
