Olin Summary

Olin, Iowa is a small town located in Jones County, Iowa. It is situated on the banks of the Wapsipinicon River, about 20 miles northwest of Cedar Rapids. The population of Olin was 1,072 at the 2010 census.

History

Olin was founded in 1854 by a group of settlers from New York. The town was named after Olin B. Smith, a prominent local businessman. The first post office was established in 1855.
In the late 19th century, Olin was a thriving agricultural community. The town was home to several grain elevators, a creamery, a flour mill, and a sawmill. The railroad arrived in 1881, connecting Olin to the rest of the state.
In the early 20th century, Olin experienced a period of growth and prosperity. The town was home to several businesses, including a bank, a hotel, a movie theater, and a variety of stores.

Geography

Olin is located at 42°14'25" North, 91°37'45" West (42.240278, -91.629167). The town is situated on the banks of the Wapsipinicon River, about 20 miles northwest of Cedar Rapids.
The town has a total area of 1.2 square miles, all of which is land. The terrain is mostly flat, with some rolling hills.

The racial makeup of the town was 97.3% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 0.9% from two or more races.
