Nichols Summary
Nichols is a small city located in Muscatine County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,093 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Muscatine Micropolitan Statistical Area.
History
Nichols was founded in 1855 by William Nichols, a settler from Ohio. The town was originally called “Nicholsville”, but the name was changed to “Nichols” in 1858. The town was incorporated in 1875.
In the late 19th century, Nichols was a thriving agricultural community. The town was home to several grain elevators, a creamery, a lumberyard, a blacksmith shop, and a hotel. The town also had a newspaper, the Nichols Gazette, which was published from 1876 to 1891.
In the early 20th century, Nichols began to decline. The railroad bypassed the town, and many of the businesses closed. The population of the town decreased from a peak of 1,400 in 1910 to just over 1,000 in 2000.
Geography
Nichols is located at 41°25'25" North, 91°14'45" West (41.423, -91.246). The city is situated on the banks of the Mississippi River, about 10 miles south of Muscatine.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.
Economy
The economy of Nichols is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several grain elevators, a feed mill, and a fertilizer plant. The town also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 298 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,541.4 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 471 housing units at an average density of 667.1 per square mile (257.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% were married couples living together, 9.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.2% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $37,500, and the median income for a family was $45,000. Males had a median income of $31,250 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,845. About 6.2% of families and 8.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
