History
New Vienna was founded in 1845 by German immigrants who had come to the area from Pennsylvania. The town was originally named New Philadelphia, but the name was changed to New Vienna in 1848. The town was incorporated in 1855.
The town was a major center of German culture in the 19th century, and many of the town's original buildings still stand today. The town was also home to a large Catholic population, and the St. Mary's Catholic Church was built in 1856.

The racial makeup of the city was 97.7% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% were married couples living together, 9.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.7% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 3.00.
