Murray Summary

Murray, Iowa is a small city located in Clarke County in the south-central part of the state. It is situated along the Des Moines River, approximately 30 miles east of Des Moines. The city has a population of approximately 1,000 people and is part of the Osceola Micropolitan Statistical Area.

History

The area that is now Murray was first settled in 1845 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The town was originally known as “Murrayville” and was named after the first settler, William Murray. The town was officially incorporated in 1876.
In the late 19th century, Murray was a thriving agricultural community. The town was home to several grain elevators, a flour mill, and a creamery. The town also had a railroad station, which connected it to the rest of the state.
In the early 20th century, the town began to decline as the railroad station closed and the agricultural industry shifted away from the area. The town’s population decreased and many of the businesses closed.
