Mount Auburn Summary

Auburn, Iowa is a small town located in Cedar County, Iowa, United States. The population was 545 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cedar Rapids Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

The town of Auburn was founded in 1854 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The town was named after Auburn, New York, the hometown of one of the settlers. The first post office was established in 1855.

In 1856 the first school was built in Auburn The town was incorporated in 1858

In the late 19th century, Auburn was a thriving agricultural community. The town was home to several businesses, including a flour mill, a sawmill, a blacksmith shop, a general store, and a hotel.
In the early 20th century, Auburn was a popular tourist destination. The town was home to several resorts, including the Auburn Hotel, the Auburn Inn, and the Auburn Beach Resort.

Economy

Auburn's economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several farms, including dairy farms, hog farms, and grain farms.
The town is also home to several businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a restaurant, and a bank.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 545 people, 212 households, and 149 families residing in the town. The population density was 890.3 people per square mile (344.7/km2). There were 224 housing units at an average density of 365.2 per square mile (141.2/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 98.18% White, 0.37% African American, 0.18% Native American, 0.37% Asian, 0.37% from other races, and 0.55% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.55% of the population.
There were 212 households, out of which 33.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.5% were married couples living together, 8.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.7% were non-families. 27.4% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
