Montezuma Summary

Montezuma, Iowa is a small town located in Poweshiek County in the south-central part of the state. It is situated along the Iowa River, about 25 miles southeast of Des Moines. The population of Montezuma was 1,845 at the 2010 census.

History

Montezuma was founded in 1854 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The town was named after the Aztec emperor Montezuma II. The first post office was established in 1855. The town was incorporated in 1876.

Montezuma is located at 41°17'25" North, 92°37'45" West (41.290278, -92.629167). The town is situated along the Iowa River, about 25 miles southeast of Des Moines.
The town has a total area of 1.2 square miles, all of it land. The terrain is mostly flat, with some rolling hills.
