Monmouth, Iowa is a small city located in Warren County, Iowa, United States. It is situated along the Des Moines River, approximately 25 miles southeast of Des Moines. The city has a population of approximately 2,500 people and is the county seat of Warren County.

History

Monmouth was founded in 1846 by a group of settlers from New England. The city was named after Monmouth, Maine, the hometown of one of the settlers. The city was incorporated in 1855 and was designated as the county seat of Warren County in 1856.
In the late 19th century, Monmouth was a thriving agricultural center and was home to several large grain elevators. The city was also home to several manufacturing businesses, including a brickyard, a furniture factory, and a canning factory.

Geography

Monmouth is located in the Des Moines River Valley, approximately 25 miles southeast of Des Moines. The city is situated on the western edge of Warren County, and is bordered by the cities of Indianola to the north, Carlisle to the east, and Milo to the south.
The city has a total area of 2.2 square miles, all of which is land. The terrain is mostly flat, with some rolling hills in the northern part of the city. The climate is humid continental, with hot summers and cold winters.
