Mingo Summary

Mingo is a small city located in Jasper County, Iowa, United States. It is situated along the Iowa River, approximately 10 miles south of Newton and 25 miles east of Des Moines. The population was 1,093 at the 2010 census.

History

Mingo was founded in 1854 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The town was named after the Mingo Indians, a Native American tribe that once lived in the area. The first post office was established in 1855.
In the late 19th century, Mingo was a thriving agricultural community. The town was home to several businesses, including a general store, a blacksmith shop, a hotel, and a sawmill.

Geography

Mingo is located at 41°41'25" North, 93°14'45" West (41.690278, -93.245833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Mingo’s economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several farms, as well as a few small businesses. The town also has a few manufacturing plants, including a furniture factory and a plastics plant.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 294 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,541.4 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 471 housing units at an average density of 671.4 per square mile (259.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% were married couples living together, 9.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.7% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $37,500, and the median income for a family was $45,000. Males had a median income of $31,250 versus $21,250 for females.
