Milo Summary

Milo is a small city located in Warren County, Iowa, United States. It is situated along the Des Moines River, approximately 25 miles southeast of Des Moines. The population was 1,072 at the 2010 census.

Geography

Milo is located at 41°25'17" North, 93°25'17" West (41.4214, -93.4214). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

History

Milo was founded in 1854 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The town was named after Milo, Ohio, the hometown of the settlers. The first post office was established in 1855. The town was incorporated in 1876.
In the late 19th century, Milo was a thriving agricultural community. The town was home to several grain elevators, a creamery, a flour mill, and a lumber yard. The town also had a hotel, a bank, and several churches.

Economy

Milo is a small, rural community with a population of 1,072. The town is primarily agricultural, with most of the population employed in farming and related industries. The town also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,072 people, 441 households, and 287 families residing in the city. The population density was 890.2 people per square mile (344.3/km2). There were 471 housing units at an average density of 391.7 per square mile (151.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.7% White, 0.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.3% from other races, and 1.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% were married couples living together, 8.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 17.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 19.2% who were 65 years of age or older.
