Mechanicsville is a small town located in Cedar County, Iowa, United States. It is situated on the banks of the Cedar River, approximately 10 miles south of Cedar Rapids. The population was 545 at the 2010 census.

History

The town of Mechanicsville was founded in 1855 by a group of settlers from Pennsylvania. The town was named after the mechanical trades that were practiced by the settlers. The first post office was established in 1856.
In the late 19th century, Mechanicsville was a thriving community with a variety of businesses, including a sawmill, a grist mill, a blacksmith shop, a general store, a hotel, and a creamery. The town also had a school, a church, and a library.

Geography

Mechanicsville is located at 42°2′17″N 91°25′17″W (42.038, -91.421). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all of it land.
