Lowden Summary

Lowden is a small city located in Cedar County, Iowa, United States. It is situated along the Cedar River, approximately 10 miles south of Cedar Rapids. The population was 545 at the 2010 census.

History

Lowden was founded in 1855 by a group of settlers from New York. The town was named after William Lowden, a prominent local businessman. The first post office was established in 1856.
In 1875, the Cedar Rapids and Iowa City Railway was built through the town, connecting it to Cedar Rapids and Iowa City. This allowed for the growth of the town, and by 1880, the population had grown to over 500.
In the early 1900s, the town was home to several businesses, including a flour mill, a creamery, a sawmill, and a brickyard. The town also had a school, a bank, and a newspaper.

Geography

Lowden is located at 41°45'25" North, 91°30'45" West (41.756944, -91.5125). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Lowden's economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several farms, as well as a few small businesses. The town also has a few restaurants and a grocery store.
