Laurel Summary

Laurel is a small city located in Jones County, Iowa, United States. It is situated along the Maquoketa River, approximately 10 miles south of the county seat of Anamosa. The population was 1,093 at the 2010 census.

History

The area that is now Laurel was first settled in 1845 by a group of settlers from New York. The town was originally known as “Laurelville”, and was later changed to “Laurel”. The town was officially incorporated in 1876.
In the late 19th century, Laurel was a thriving agricultural community, with a variety of businesses and industries. The town was home to a number of mills, including a flour mill, a sawmill, and a grist mill. The town also had a blacksmith shop, a general store, a hotel, and a post office.

Geography

Laurel is located at 42°2′17″N 91°17′17″W (42.038, -91.288). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.77 square miles (1.99 km2), all of it land.

Economy

The economy of Laurel is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to a number of farms, which produce a variety of crops, including corn, soybeans, and hay. The town also has a number of small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 287 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,417.3 people per square mile (547.2/km2). There were 471 housing units at an average density of 609.1 per square mile (234.9/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.7% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% were married couples living together, 8.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.7% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $37,500, and the median income for a family was $45,000. Males had a median income of $31,250 versus $21,250 for females.
