Ionia Summary

Ionia is a small city located in Chickasaw County, Iowa, United States. It is situated on the banks of the Cedar River, approximately 20 miles east of Waterloo. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census.

History

Ionia was founded in 1856 by a group of settlers from New York. The town was named after Ionia County, Michigan, which was named after the ancient Greek region of Ionia. The first settlers were mostly farmers, and the town quickly grew to include a post office, a school, a church, and a general store.
In 1875, the Cedar Valley Railroad was built through Ionia, connecting the town to Waterloo and Cedar Rapids. This allowed for the growth of the town, and by the early 1900s, Ionia had become a thriving agricultural center.

Geography

Ionia is located at 42°25'45" North, 92°20'45" West (42.4292, -92.3457). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Ionia's economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several grain elevators, as well as a feed mill and a fertilizer plant. The town also has a small manufacturing sector, with several small businesses producing a variety of products.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,539.2 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 809 housing units at an average density of 674.2 per square mile (260.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 28.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.3% were married couples living together, 10.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 19.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $37,500, and the median income for a family was $45,000. Males had a median income of $31,250 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,945. About 6.2% of families and 8.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
