Geography

Hampton is located at 42°17′45″N 93°14′45″W (42.295833, -93.245833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.17 square miles (10.77 km2), all of it land.

History

Hampton was founded in 1853 by William and Mary Hampton. The city was named after the Hamptons, who were among the first settlers in the area. The city was incorporated in 1858.
The first post office in Hampton was established in 1854. The first school in Hampton was established in 1856. The first newspaper in Hampton was the Hampton Herald, which was established in 1858.
The first railroad line to reach Hampton was the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Railroad in 1872. The railroad line was later extended to Des Moines in 1876.

The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 20.6% who were 65 years of age or older.
