History

Guthrie Center was founded in 1854 by William Guthrie, a settler from Ohio. The town was originally called Guthrie's Grove, but the name was changed to Guthrie Center in 1858. The town was incorporated in 1872.
Guthrie Center was a major stop on the Chicago and North Western Railway, which ran through the town from 1872 to 1971. The railroad was a major factor in the town's growth and development.

There were 645 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.2% were non-families. 34.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 17.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 2.94.
