Graf Summary

Graf is a city located in Clayton County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,093 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dubuque, Iowa Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Graf was founded in 1855 by German immigrants. The town was named after the Graf family, who were among the first settlers. The town was originally known as Graf's Station, but the name was shortened to Graf in 1876.
Graf was incorporated as a city in 1891. The city was a major stop on the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad, which ran through the town. The railroad was a major factor in the growth of the town, as it allowed for the transportation of goods and people.

Economy

Graf's economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several farms, as well as a few small businesses. The town also has a few restaurants and bars.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 294 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,822.5 people per square mile (704.3/km2). There were 471 housing units at an average density of 785.0 per square mile (303.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.7% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% were married couples living together, 9.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.7% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $37,500, and the median income for a family was $45,000. Males had a median income of $31,250 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,845. About 5.2% of families and 8.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.3% of those under age 18 and 8.3% of those age 65 or over.
