History
Goose Lake was first settled in 1837 by a group of settlers from New York. The town was originally known as “Goose Lake Settlement” and was located on the banks of the Wapsipinicon River. The settlers built a sawmill and a gristmill, and the town quickly grew. In 1845, the town was officially incorporated as “Goose Lake”.
In the late 19th century, Goose Lake was a thriving community with a population of over 1,000 people. The town had several stores, a hotel, a bank, a post office, a blacksmith shop, and a school. The town was also home to a number of churches, including the Methodist Episcopal Church, the Congregational Church, and the Catholic Church.
In the early 20th century, Goose Lake began to decline in population as many of its residents moved away in search of better economic opportunities. By the 1950s, the population had dropped to just over 500 people.
