History

Gilbert was founded in 1881 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The town was named after Gilbert H. Giddings, one of the original settlers. The town was incorporated in 1882 and quickly grew to become a thriving agricultural community. The town was home to a number of businesses, including a bank, a hotel, and a number of stores.
In the early 1900s, the town was home to a number of churches, including the Methodist Episcopal Church, the Congregational Church, and the Presbyterian Church. The town also had a number of schools, including a high school, a grade school, and a business college.
