Geneva Summary

Geneva is a city located in Franklin County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Franklin County.

History

Geneva was founded in 1854 by a group of settlers from Geneva, New York. The city was named after the New York town, and the first post office was established in 1855. The city was incorporated in 1876.

Geography

Geneva is located at 41°45'25" North, 93°17'45" West (41.756944, -93.295833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Geneva is a small rural community with a strong agricultural base. The city is home to several businesses, including a feed mill, a grain elevator, a lumber yard, and a variety of small retail stores. The city also has a small industrial park.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,541.2 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 809 housing units at an average density of 667.2 per square mile (258.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 98.45% White, 0.11% African American, 0.11% Native American, 0.11% Asian, 0.11% Pacific Islander, 0.33% from other races, and 0.89% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.60% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.7% were married couples living together, 8.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.7% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 19.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.98.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 22.2% who were 65 years of age or older.
