Garnavillo Summary
Garnavillo is a small city located in Clayton County, Iowa, United States. It is situated along the Turkey River and is part of the Dubuque, Iowa Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 602 at the 2010 census.
History
Garnavillo was founded in 1847 by a group of German immigrants led by John G. Schutte. The town was named after the German city of Garnavillo, which was the hometown of Schutte and many of the other settlers. The first settlers built a log cabin and a sawmill, and the town quickly grew. By 1854, Garnavillo had a population of over 500 and was home to several businesses, including a hotel, a blacksmith shop, a general store, and a post office.
In the late 19th century, Garnavillo was a major center for the production of brick and tile. The town was also home to several other industries, including a flour mill, a creamery, and a furniture factory.

Garnavillo is located at 42°37′17″N 91°20′45″W (42.621445, -91.345845). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.77 square miles (1.99 km2), all of it land.

Garnavillo’s economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several farms, and the surrounding area is known for its production of corn, soybeans, and other crops.

The racial makeup of the city was 98.5% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 0.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.7% of the population.
There were 250 households, out of which 28.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.0% were married couples living together, 8.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.3% under the age of 18, 6.3% from 18 to 24, 24.3% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 19.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
