History

Eldora was founded in 1856 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The town was named after the daughter of one of the settlers, Eldora Smith. The town was incorporated in 1872.
In the late 19th century, Eldora was a major center for the lumber industry. The town was home to several sawmills and lumber yards. The town also had a large brickyard and several other industries.

Eldora's economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several grain elevators and other agricultural businesses. The town also has several manufacturing businesses, including a furniture factory and a plastics factory.

As of the census of 2000, there were 2,902 people, 1,179 households, and 745 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,323.2 people per square mile (510.7/km2). There were 1,269 housing units at an average density of 571.2 per square mile (220.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.90% White, 0.17% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.90% from other races, and 0.66% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.90% of the population.
There were 1,179 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.3% were married couples living together, 9.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.7% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 17.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.98.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 21.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82.2 males.
