Dunkerton Summary
Dunkerton is a small city located in Black Hawk County, Iowa, United States. The population was 845 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Waterloo–Cedar Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area.
History
Dunkerton was founded in 1856 by a group of settlers from Dunkerton, England. The town was named after the English town, and the settlers brought with them many of the customs and traditions of their homeland. The first post office was established in 1857.
The town grew slowly, but steadily, and by the turn of the century, it had become a thriving agricultural community. The town was incorporated in 1902, and the first mayor was elected in 1903.
In the early 1900s, Dunkerton was a major producer of eggs and poultry. The town was also home to a number of small businesses, including a creamery, a feed mill, a lumber yard, and a blacksmith shop.
Geography
Dunkerton is located at 42°27′17″N 92°20′17″W (42.454722, -92.338333). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.77 square miles (1.99 km2), all of it land.

Dunkerton's economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several farms, and the surrounding area is known for its production of corn, soybeans, and hogs.
The town is also home to a number of small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a restaurant, and a bank.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 845 people, 339 households, and 233 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,093.5 people per square mile (422.3/km2). There were 359 housing units at an average density of 466.2 per square mile (179.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 339 households, out of which 33.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.3% were married couples living together, 9.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.3% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $41,250, and the median income for a family was $48,750. Males had a median income of $31,250 versus $22,500 for females.
