Dixon Summary

Dixon, Iowa is a small city located in Lee County, Iowa. It is situated on the banks of the Mississippi River, approximately 20 miles south of the Iowa-Illinois border. The city has a population of 1,845 people, according to the 2010 census.

History

Dixon was founded in 1837 by William Dixon, a settler from Ohio. He purchased the land from the government and began to build a small settlement. The town was originally called Dixonville, but the name was changed to Dixon in 1841. The town was incorporated in 1853.
In the late 19th century, Dixon was a thriving river port. It was a major stop for steamboats traveling up and down the Mississippi River. The town also had a large lumber industry, with several sawmills located in the area.
In the early 20th century, Dixon began to decline. The steamboat industry had been replaced by railroads, and the lumber industry had moved elsewhere. The town was hit hard by the Great Depression, and many of its residents left in search of work.
