History

The area that is now Dewitt was first settled in 1837 by a group of settlers from New York. The settlement was originally known as "New York Settlement" and was later renamed "Dewitt" in honor of DeWitt Clinton, the former governor of New York. The city was officially incorporated in 1858.
In the late 19th century, Dewitt was a major center for the lumber industry. The city was home to several sawmills and lumber yards, as well as a number of other businesses related to the lumber industry.
In the early 20th century, Dewitt was a major center for the agricultural industry. The city was home to several grain elevators, as well as a number of other businesses related to the agricultural industry.

The racial makeup of the city was 95.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 1.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.2% of the population.
There were 2,093 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 12.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.7% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 years of age or older.
