The city of Columbus Junction was founded in 1868 by a group of settlers from Columbus, Ohio. The city was named after the Ohio city, and the settlers hoped to create a similar atmosphere in their new home. The city was incorporated in 1871.
The city was originally a farming community, but it soon developed into a manufacturing center. The first industry in the city was a sawmill, which was built in 1871. This was followed by a grist mill, a woolen mill, a furniture factory, and a brickyard.

The racial makeup of the city was 97.45% White, 0.43% African American, 0.11% Native American, 0.43% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.43% from other races, and 0.99% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.02% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.3% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.2% were non-families. 30.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.06.
