Colo Summary

Colo is a city located in Story County, Iowa, United States. It is part of the Ames, Iowa Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 1,039 at the 2010 census.

History

Colo was founded in 1856 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The town was named after Colo, Ohio, the hometown of the settlers. The first post office in Colo was established in 1857.

Economy

The economy of Colo is largely based on agriculture. The city is home to several farms, including the Colo-Nesco School District Farm, which is used to teach students about farming and agriculture.
The city also has several businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a bank, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,039 people, 431 households, and 287 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,205.8 people per square mile (465.2/km2). There were 463 housing units at an average density of 537.2 per square mile (207.6/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.7% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 431 households, out of which 28.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 8.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.7% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.40 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
