Clermont Summary

Clermont is a small city located in Fayette County, Iowa, United States. The population was 545 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Waterloo–Cedar Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Clermont was founded in 1854 by a group of settlers from Clermont County, Ohio. The town was named after the county in Ohio. The first post office was established in 1855.
In 1856, the first school was built in Clermont. The first church was built in 1858. The first newspaper, the Clermont Courier, was established in 1867.
In 1871, the first railroad line was built through Clermont. This allowed the town to become a major shipping point for grain and livestock.

In 1891, the first electric lights were installed in Clermont. The first waterworks were built in 1895.
In the early 1900s, Clermont was a thriving community with a population of over 1,000. The town had several stores, a hotel, a bank, a newspaper, a creamery, a lumberyard, a blacksmith shop, a harness shop, a furniture store, a hardware store, a drug store, a barber shop, a livery stable, a meat market, a bakery, a shoe store, a millinery shop, a theater, and a number of churches.

Economy

Clermont's economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several grain elevators and a feed mill.
The town also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a restaurant, and a bar.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 545 people, 221 households, and 149 families residing in the city. The population density was 891.7 people per square mile (344.7/km2). There were 233 housing units at an average density of 382.5 per square mile (147.6/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.4% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 221 households, out of which 28.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.0% were married couples living together, 8.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.3% were non-families. 29.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.46 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 19.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $37,500, and the median income for a family was $45,000. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $21,250 for females.
