History

Clarksville was founded in 1851 by William Clark, a settler from Ohio. The town was named after him. The first post office was established in 1853. The town was incorporated in 1858.
In the late 19th century, Clarksville was a major center for the production of brick and tile. The town was also home to a large number of businesses, including a bank, a newspaper, a hotel, a blacksmith shop, a livery stable, a furniture store, a drug store, a hardware store, a millinery shop, a harness shop, a barber shop, a bakery, a meat market, a shoe store, a grocery store, a dry goods store, a saloon, a lumber yard, a creamery, a pool hall, a theater, and a number of churches.
