Chelsea Summary

Chelsea is a small city located in Tama County, Iowa, United States. It is situated on the Iowa River, approximately 20 miles east of Marshalltown and 40 miles west of Cedar Rapids. The population of Chelsea was 1,093 at the 2010 census, making it the smallest incorporated city in the state of Iowa.

History

The area that is now Chelsea was first settled in 1854 by a group of German immigrants. The town was originally known as “New Germany” and was later renamed “Chelsea” after the English city of the same name. The town was officially incorporated in 1876.
In the late 19th century, Chelsea was a thriving agricultural community, with a population of over 1,000 people. The town was home to several businesses, including a flour mill, a creamery, a blacksmith shop, and a general store.
