Central City Summary

Central City is a small city located in Linn County, Iowa, United States. It is situated on the banks of the Cedar River, approximately 20 miles north of Cedar Rapids. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census.

History

Central City was founded in 1855 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The city was originally named “Centerville”, but the name was changed to Central City in 1857. The city was incorporated in 1872.
Central City was a major stop on the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad, which ran through the city from 1866 to 1970. The railroad was a major factor in the city’s growth and development.

Central City’s economy is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to several large agricultural businesses, including a grain elevator, a feed mill, and a dairy. The city also has several manufacturing businesses, including a furniture factory, a plastics factory, and a metal fabrication plant.
