Marshall County Summary

Marshall County, Iowa is located in the north central part of the state and is bordered by Cerro Gordo County to the north, Franklin County to the east, Hardin County to the south, and Story County to the west. The county seat is Marshalltown, which is also the largest city in the county. Marshall County was established in 1846 and is named after Chief Justice John Marshall of the United States Supreme Court.

Geography

Marshall County covers an area of 576 square miles and is located in the rolling hills of the Iowa River Valley. The county is mostly rural, with the majority of the population living in the county seat of Marshalltown. The county is home to several small towns, including Albion, Ferguson, Gilman, Green Mountain, Liscomb, Melbourne, Rhodes, and State Center. The county is also home to several small lakes, including Clear Lake, Lake Ponderosa, and Lake Smith.
The county is home to several parks, including the Marshalltown City Park, the Marshall County Park, and the Marshall County Conservation Board. The county is also home to several wildlife areas, including the Marshall County Wildlife Area, the Marshall County Wildlife Refuge, and the Marshall County Wildlife Management Area.

Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.2% of the population.

About 8.2% of families and 11.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 15.2% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.
Marshall County is served by the Marshalltown Community School District, which consists of seven elementary schools, two middle schools, and one high school. The county is also home to several private schools, including the Marshalltown Christian School, the Marshalltown Montessori School, and the Marshalltown Lutheran School. The county is also home to several higher education institutions, including the Marshalltown Community College, the Iowa Valley Community College District, and the University of Northern Iowa.
