History
Buffalo Center was founded in 1856 by a group of settlers from Buffalo, New York. The town was named after the nearby Buffalo Creek. The first post office was established in 1858. The town was incorporated in 1881.

The economy of Buffalo Center is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several grain elevators, a feed mill, and a fertilizer plant. The town also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 1,072 people, 441 households, and 287 families residing in the city. The population density was 972.7 people per square mile (375.3/km2). There were 471 housing units at an average density of 425.5 per square mile (164.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.7% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.2% were married couples living together, 8.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.3% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 18.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 22.7% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 24.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 84.2 males.
