Birmingham Summary

Birmingham, Iowa is a small city located in the southeastern corner of the state, in the county of Lee. It is situated on the banks of the Mississippi River, and is part of the Quad Cities metropolitan area. The city has a population of approximately 2,500 people, and is the county seat of Lee County.

History

Birmingham was founded in 1837 by a group of settlers from the nearby town of Fort Madison. The town was named after Birmingham, England, and was originally intended to be a trading post. The town quickly grew, and by 1841 it had become the county seat of Lee County.
In the late 19th century, Birmingham was a major hub for the lumber industry, and the town was home to several sawmills and lumber yards. The town also had a thriving agricultural industry, and was home to several grain elevators and other agricultural businesses.
In the early 20th century, Birmingham was a major stop on the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad. The railroad brought a great deal of economic growth to the town, and it was home to several factories and other businesses.
