Belle Plaine Summary

Belle Plaine is a city located in Benton County, Iowa, United States. The population was 2,890 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Benton County.

History

Belle Plaine was founded in 1851 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The town was named after the French phrase for "beautiful plain," which was chosen to reflect the town's flat terrain. The first post office was established in 1853.
In 1856, the first school was built in Belle Plaine. The town was incorporated in 1858. In 1864, the first newspaper, the Belle Plaine Herald, was established.
In 1871, the first railroad line was built through Belle Plaine, connecting it to Cedar Rapids and Waterloo. This allowed the town to become a major shipping center for the surrounding area.
In 1875, the first bank was established in Belle Plaine. The town continued to grow and by the early 1900s, it had become a major agricultural center.

Geography

Belle Plaine is located at 41°55'25" North, 92°14'45" West (41.923750, -92.245833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Belle Plaine is a small, rural community with a strong agricultural base. The town is home to several large farms, as well as several small businesses. The town is also home to a number of manufacturing companies, including a furniture factory and a plastics factory.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 2,890 people, 1,093 households, and 745 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,312.7 people per square mile (506.2/km2). There were 1,164 housing units at an average density of 527.3 per square mile (203.6/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.7% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.2% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $37,917, and the median income for a family was $45,000. Males had a median income of $31,964 versus $22,500 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,845. About 6.2% of families and 8.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
