Aredale Summary
Aredale is a small city located in Butler County, Iowa, United States. The population was estimated to be 441 in the 2010 census. It is part of the Waterloo–Cedar Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area.
Geography
Aredale is located at 42°37′17″N 92°45′17″W (42.6214, -92.7548). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.4 square miles (1.0 km2), all of it land.
History
Aredale was founded in 1881 by a group of settlers from Aredale, England. The town was named after the English town, and the settlers brought with them many of the customs and traditions of their homeland. The first post office was established in 1882.
The town grew slowly but steadily, and by the turn of the century, it had a population of around 500. The town was incorporated in 1902.
In the early 1900s, Aredale was a thriving agricultural community. The town had a number of businesses, including a bank, a hotel, a blacksmith shop, a livery stable, a creamery, and a general store.
The town was also home to a number of churches, including the Methodist Episcopal Church, the Congregational Church, and the Catholic Church.
Economy
Aredale’s economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to a number of farms, and the surrounding area is known for its production of corn, soybeans, and hogs.
The town also has a number of small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a restaurant, and a gas station.
