Alta Vista Summary

Alta Vista is a city located in Chickasaw County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,072 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Hampton Micropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Alta Vista was founded in 1856 by a group of German immigrants. The town was originally named “New Berlin”, but was later changed to Alta Vista, which means “high view” in Spanish. The town was incorporated in 1876.

Economy

Alta Vista’s economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several farms, as well as a few small businesses. The town also has a few manufacturing plants, including a furniture factory and a plastics factory.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,072 people, 441 households, and 287 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,392.3 people per square mile (538.2/km2). There were 471 housing units at an average density of 609.1 per square mile (235.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.7% White, 0.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.3% from other races, and 1.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% were married couples living together, 8.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.7% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 17.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 20.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $37,500, and the median income for a family was $45,000. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $21,250 for females.
