Alburnett Summary

Alburnett is a small city located in Linn County, Iowa, United States. It is situated on the banks of the Cedar River, about 10 miles northwest of Cedar Rapids. The population was 845 at the 2010 census.

History

Alburnett was founded in 1855 by William and Mary Alburnett, who had moved to the area from Ohio. The town was originally known as Alburnett's Landing, and was a popular stop for steamboats traveling up and down the Cedar River. In 1858, the town was renamed Alburnett, and the first post office was established.
In the late 19th century, Alburnett was a thriving agricultural community, with a variety of businesses, including a flour mill, a sawmill, a blacksmith shop, and a general store. The town also had a school, a church, and a newspaper.
In the early 20th century, Alburnett experienced a period of growth and prosperity. The town was incorporated in 1912, and the first mayor was elected in 1913. The town continued to grow, and by the 1950s, it had a population of over 1,000.

Geography

Alburnett is located at 42°7'25" North, 91°37'25" West (42.123611, -91.623889). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2.3 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Alburnett's economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several farms, as well as a variety of small businesses. The town also has a few manufacturing companies, including a furniture factory and a plastics factory.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 845 people, 327 households, and 229 families residing in the city. The population density was 938.9 people per square mile (362.3/km2). There were 347 housing units at an average density of 385.6 per square mile (148.9/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.3% White, 0.6% African American, 0.1% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
