Albion Summary

Albion is a city located in Marshall County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,093 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Marshalltown, Iowa Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Albion was founded in 1856 by a group of settlers from Albion, New York. The town was named after the city in New York. The first post office was established in 1857. The town was incorporated in 1876.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.77 square miles (1.99 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Albion is a small rural community with a population of 1,093. The economy is largely based on agriculture, with corn and soybeans being the main crops. There are also several small businesses in the area, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 294 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,420.3 people per square mile (548.7/km2). There were 471 housing units at an average density of 609.1 per square mile (234.9/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.7% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% were married couples living together, 9.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.7% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.04.
