Agency Summary

Agency is a small unincorporated community located in Wapello County, Iowa, United States. It is situated along the Des Moines River, approximately five miles south of Ottumwa, the county seat. The population of Agency was estimated to be around 500 in 2020.

History

The area that is now Agency was first settled in the early 1830s by a group of settlers from Kentucky. The settlement was originally known as “Kentucky Settlement”, but was later renamed “Agency” in 1837. The name was chosen to reflect the fact that the settlement was located near the Indian Agency, which was a government office that was responsible for managing relations between the local Native American tribes and the United States government.
The town of Agency was officially platted in 1845 and was incorporated in 1851. During the late 19th century, Agency was a thriving community with a variety of businesses, including a hotel, a general store, a blacksmith shop, a sawmill, and a gristmill.

Geography

Agency is located in southeastern Iowa, approximately five miles south of Ottumwa, the county seat of Wapello County. The town is situated along the Des Moines River, which flows through the area. The terrain in the area is mostly flat, with some rolling hills. The climate in Agency is humid continental, with hot summers and cold winters.

Economy

The economy of Agency is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several farms, which produce a variety of crops, including corn, soybeans, and hay. In addition, there are several businesses in the area, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

The racial makeup of the town was 97.2% White, 0.2% African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races.
