Adair Summary
Adair is a city located in the state of Iowa in the United States. It is located in the western part of the state, in Adair County, and is part of the Des Moines–West Des Moines Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 1,039.
History
Adair was founded in 1856 by settlers from Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York. The city was named after John Adair, a Revolutionary War hero and the eighth Governor of Kentucky. The first post office in Adair was established in 1857.
In 1868, the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad built a line through Adair, connecting it to the larger cities of Des Moines and Omaha. This allowed Adair to become an important shipping center for the surrounding area.
In 1875, the Adair County Courthouse was built, and the city was incorporated in 1876. The courthouse was destroyed by a tornado in 1882, but was rebuilt the following year.
Geography
Adair is located at 41°25'25" North, 94°30'45" West (41.423, -94.512). It is situated in the western part of Adair County, about 10 miles (16 km) east of the county seat of Greenfield.
Adair has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land. The city is located in the Loess Hills region of Iowa, and is surrounded by rolling hills and farmland.
Economy
Adair's economy is largely based on agriculture. The city is home to several grain elevators, and the surrounding area is used for growing corn, soybeans, and other crops.
Adair is also home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant. The city is served by the Adair County Bank, which has been in operation since 1875.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 1,039 people, 431 households, and 279 families living in Adair. The population density was 862.5 people per square mile (332.7/km2). There were 463 housing units at an average density of 382.5 per square mile (147.7/km2).
The racial makeup of the city was 97.7% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 431 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 8.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 17.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 20.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $35,000, and the median income for a family was $41,250. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,845. About 6.2% of families and 8.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
