Westminster Summary

Westminster is a town located in Windham County, Vermont, United States. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Windham County. Westminster is located in the southeastern corner of the state, near the Connecticut River.

History

The area that is now Westminster was first settled in 1768 by a group of settlers from Massachusetts. The town was originally called Newfane, but was later changed to Westminster in 1781. The town was named after Westminster, England, which was the birthplace of one of the original settlers.
The town was an important center of commerce and industry in the 19th century. It was home to several mills, including a woolen mill, a paper mill, and a grist mill. The town was also home to a number of other businesses, including a tannery, a blacksmith shop, and a sawmill.

Geography

Westminster is located in the southeastern corner of Windham County, near the Connecticut River. The town is bordered by the towns of Putney to the north, Dummerston to the east, Brattleboro to the south, and Newfane to the west.
The town has a total area of 24.2 square miles, of which 24.1 square miles is land and 0.1 square miles is water. The town is located in the Connecticut River Valley, and is surrounded by hills and mountains. The highest point in the town is the summit of Bald Mountain, which has an elevation of 1,890 feet.

Economy

Westminster is a rural town with a small but diverse economy. The town is home to several small businesses, including a sawmill, a blacksmith shop, and a grist mill. The town is also home to a number of farms, which produce a variety of crops, including corn, hay, and apples.
The town is also home to a number of tourist attractions, including the Westminster Historical Society Museum, the Westminster Covered Bridge, and the Westminster Town Hall. The town is also home to a number of restaurants, shops, and other businesses.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the town. The population density was 76.5 people per square mile. There were 817 housing units at an average density of 33.8 per square mile.
The racial makeup of the town was 97.2% White, 0.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.4% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 9.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.2% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 3.00.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 27.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $41,250, and the median income for a family was $50,000. Males had a median income of $35,000 versus $25,000 for females.
